Canines

Coyote
If not bothered by people, the coyote will come out during the day to hunt. Normally they will keep their distance from people, but they are know to snatch small dogs off the leash from people when on remote trails.

Felines

Bobcat
This one came running across the road in front of my car. I was able to shoot a few photos through the passenger side window. Not an ideal photography set-up, but you take wildlife where and when you can find it.

Sheep

Peninsular Bighorn Sheep
Also known as the Desert Bighorn Sheep, these endangered animals were a happy surprise after a long desert hike.

Rabbits & Hares

Black-tailed Jackrabbit
These rabbits are very well adapted to living in the arid conditions of the western deserts.

Desert Cottontail Rabbit
These rabbits are found all over the western part of the United States. The younger ones aren't nearly as timid as the older ones, probably because they haven't yet learned how many animals like to eat them.

Eastern Cottontail Rabbit
Like the species above, this small rabbit is found in abundance through-out its range, which extends through the prairies of Colorado all the way to the Rocky Mountains.

Deer

Black-tailed Deer
Considered to be a subspecies of the Mule Deer (see below). It is the smallest of the three native "deer" species in the US.

Elk
The second largest species of deer in the world, smaller than only the Moose.

Mule Deer
The most popular deer west of the Missouri River. It is a species of deer that is well adapted to the drier environment of their range.

Antelope

Pronghorn Antelope
Not a true antelope, but actually a member of the family Antilocapridae. These animals roam all over the Great Plains of the US and are the last living member of their family on Earth.

Misc. Mammals

Indian Mongoose
These run wild all over many of the Hawaiian Islands. They have wiped out the Moa (a wild jungle chicken) on some of the islands, along with devastating the population of many other endangered birds and animals. For a great article on how the mongoose came to live in Hawaii, click here.

Prairie Dog
Like many other rodents, one of the biggest problems with these animals is that their fleas are know to carry plague. They are considered to be a pest to people who live in their home range and have to deal with tunneling through their land.

Nine-banded Armadillo
I couldn't get this one to come out of the grass and pose nicely. Very different from seeing them on the as roadkill.

Squirrels

Tree Squirrel

Eastern Gray Squirrel
A very abundant tree squirrel species. They can be found living almost everywhere on the east coast.

Western Gray Squirrel
These are timid compared to the Fox Squirrel. They are only found in the mountain areas because they have been displaced by non-native Fox Squirrels that were introduced into California.

Ground Squirrel

White-tailed Antelope Squirrel
One of five species of Antelope Squirrel, these small animals are very active during the day and easy to watch. In some places in Nevada there are signs posted that they may carry plague!

California Ground Squirrel
The squirrels are found all over California. Many have been fed by people for so long that they will run right up to you expecting food.

Chipmunk
These little critters seem to like to pose for the camera, but they dive for cover if approached too closely.

Tracks

Racoon
I found these while out doing some scouting in a new urban location. These animals can live just about anywhere, but are usualy only found at night.
